How to Install Drywall: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Drywall installation is one of those trades that looks approachable until you're holding a 4×8 sheet on a ladder over your head. The basic concept is straightforward — fasten board to framing, tape the seams, apply joint compound, sand, prime, paint. But the sequence matters, the details matter, and skipping steps creates problems that show up six months later as cracks, nail pops, or seams telegraphing through finished paint.

This guide walks through the full process for a first-time installer. It covers material selection, layout, fastening, and finishing in the right order. It also covers where Calgary-specific conditions change what you'd do compared to a general how-to guide — because they do.

Before anything else: if your drywall project is part of a new basement development, wall relocation, or work that involves electrical or plumbing, you may need a building permit from the City of Calgary before touching the framing. Step 1: Know What You're Installing Before You Buy

The board you use depends on where it's going. Calgary conditions make this more consequential than in a dryer climate.

For a Calgary basement specifically, we do not install standard drywall below grade. The freeze-thaw cycle, clay soil moisture, and cold foundation walls create condensation conditions that will compromise standard gypsum board over time. Step 2: Gather Your Tools and Materials

You don't need a professional kit, but you do need the right tools for each phase. Using the wrong tool slows you down and produces worse results.

For hanging:

  • Tape measure and chalk line
  • Drywall T-square (4' minimum)
  • Utility knife with fresh blades — dull blades tear rather than score
  • Drywall saw or jab saw (for cutouts around outlets and boxes)
  • Drill with a drywall screw bit (a dimpler bit stops screws at the right depth automatically)
  • Drywall screws: 1-5/8" for 1/2" board on wood framing, 2-1/2" for 5/8" board
  • Drywall lift for ceilings — do not try to hold ceiling sheets manually with two people; it does not work

For finishing:

  • Corner bead (metal or paper — we'll cover both)
  • Paper tape and/or mesh tape
  • Premixed all-purpose joint compound (mud)
  • Setting compound (hot mud) for first coat on large repairs or gaps
  • 6", 10", and 12" drywall knives
  • Sanding pole with 120-grit paper, then 150-grit
  • Bucket, mixing paddle, and clean water

Step 3: Prep the Framing

Drywall goes on straight, dry, properly spaced framing. If your framing isn't ready, your drywall won't be flat.

Check for moisture. In a Calgary basement, this means verifying your vapour barrier is installed and intact before any board goes up. Trapping moisture between the vapour barrier and the drywall is a direct path to mould. If you're not sure about your insulation and vapour barrier situation, get that confirmed first — batt insulation goes in before drywall, not after.

Check stud spacing. Standard wood stud framing for residential walls runs at 16" on centre. Ceiling framing typically runs at 16" or 24" on centre — 16" for 1/2" board, 24" maximum for 5/8" board. If your spacing is irregular, the sheet edges won't land on studs and you'll have fastening problems.

Straighten any crowned or bowed studs. A crowned stud creates a ridge that reads through finished drywall. Mark bad studs before boarding and either replace them or cut a kerf to flatten them.

Mark stud locations on the floor and ceiling. Once the board is up, you can't see the framing. Running a pencil line on the floor and ceiling plate showing each stud location saves time during fastening and prevents missed screws.


Step 4: Hang the Ceiling First

Always hang ceiling drywall before wall drywall. The wall sheets will butt up under the ceiling sheets and help support the edges — reversing this order creates a gap problem.

Ceiling work is physically demanding and requires a drywall lift. Rent one. A lift holds the sheet at height while you fasten it, lets one person work safely, and doesn't put the sheet at risk of snapping from the flex of two people holding it overhead.

Positioning:

  • Run sheets perpendicular to ceiling joists where possible
  • Stage sheets so butt ends (the non-tapered ends) land on a joist
  • Tapered edges face each other — these are the factory edges designed for taping
  • Stagger your joints so no two seams line up end-to-end in adjacent rows

Fastening:

  • Space screws at 12" on centre in the field (middle of the sheet), 8" on centre at the perimeter
  • Drive screws so the head dimples the paper surface without breaking through it — the dimpler bit handles this automatically
  • Two screws per joist at each edge is the minimum

Step 5: Hang the Walls

Wall sheets go up horizontally (flat) in most residential applications. Hanging them this way means fewer vertical seams running floor-to-ceiling, which are harder to tape than horizontal ones.

Start at the top. The top row of wall sheets meets the ceiling drywall. Install with the top edge snug to the ceiling sheet — this provides continuous backing support. Leave a 1/4" to 1/2" gap at the floor; the baseboard will cover it, and a gap prevents moisture wicking from a concrete floor.

Mark your cutouts before lifting the sheet. Measure your outlet box locations, window openings, and any penetrations from the floor and edges of the nearest sheet. Transfer those measurements to the board and cut before hanging. Cutting in place after the sheet is up is slower and less accurate.

Fastening walls:

  • 16" on centre screws in the field
  • 8" on centre at the perimeter and edges
  • Keep screws a minimum of 3/8" from the edge of the board to avoid breaking out

Outside corners get metal or vinyl corner bead. Inside corners get paper tape, no bead. Don't use mesh tape on inside corners — mesh doesn't hold the corner angle under joint compound the same way paper does.


Step 6: Tape the Joints

Taping is where finish quality is determined. This phase has three coats and each one needs to dry fully before the next.

Coat 1: Tape Coat

Spread a thin layer of all-purpose joint compound into the joint. Embed paper tape into the wet compound using your 6" knife — run it flat, press out air bubbles, and wipe off the excess on both sides. At butt joints (non-tapered edges meeting), you'll need to feather the compound further because there's no recessed channel to work into.

Don't skip the tape and just fill with compound. Compound alone cracks. The tape provides tensile strength across the joint.

Coat 1 sets and dries overnight minimum. In a Calgary basement in winter, drying times extend — cold, low-humidity conditions can slow compound cure or cause it to freeze if the space isn't heated above 10°C.

Coat 2: Block Coat

Use a 10" or 12" knife. Apply a wider, thinner coat over the taped joint, feathering the edges 4–6" beyond the first coat. This coat levels out the tape ridge and starts building the flat surface. Do all inside corners and screw dimples in this coat as well.

Coat 3: Finish Coat

Thin your compound slightly with water for a smoother consistency. Apply a final skim coat, feathering 8–10" on either side of the joint. This coat should require minimal sanding if applied correctly. Screw dimples get their third fill here too.

For a professional taping and mudding result, the finish coat shouldn't be visible under a 60-degree sidelight after sanding. If it is, add another coat rather than trying to sand out high spots.


Step 7: Sand, Prime, and Inspect

Sand with 120-grit on a pole sander after the final coat is fully dry. Move to 150-grit for a second pass. Don't over-sand — cutting through the paper face of the compound or into the drywall paper creates a texture problem that shows under paint.

Prime before painting. Unprimed joint compound is porous and will absorb paint unevenly, creating a phenomenon called "flashing" — where seam areas appear dull against the surrounding board even after two coats of paint. A drywall-specific primer seals the surface and gives you an even base.

After priming, inspect under a work light held at a sharp angle to the wall. This sidelighting catches any remaining ridges, low spots, or marks. Fix those before you paint, not after.


When This Becomes a Permit Project in Calgary

Replacing drywall on an existing wall as a cosmetic repair — patching, resurfacing, or replacing damaged board — generally does not trigger a building permit in Calgary, because the City's renovation guidelines exempt wholly cosmetic work (City of Calgary, Renovation & Permits). But these scenarios do require a permit:

  • First-time basement development — finishing an unfinished basement for the first time requires a building permit from the City of Calgary (calgary.ca)
  • Moving or removing walls — any structural change to interior or exterior walls requires a building permit (City of Calgary, Renovation & Permits)
  • Creating new openings — new openings in interior or exterior walls require a building permit (City of Calgary, Renovation & Permits)
  • Electrical work behind the walls — extending or altering any existing electrical branch circuit requires a separate electrical permit (City of Calgary, Renovation & Permits)
  • Plumbing work — new or altered plumbing systems require a separate plumbing permit (City of Calgary, Renovation & Permits)

If you're drywalling a basement for the first time, you're in permit territory. If you're patching a wall after a leak, you're not. The line matters, and getting it wrong — doing permitted work without a permit — creates problems at sale or refinance. Where Beginners Consistently Make Mistakes

In our experience, first-time installers run into the same set of problems. Here's what to watch for:

Butt joints in bad locations. Butt joints (non-tapered edges) are harder to finish than tapered ones. Don't place them in high-visibility spots — door adjacents, corners of the room, or directly across from windows where sidelight will expose any ridge.

Overdriving or underdriving screws. Underdriven screws create bumps under the compound that telegraph through. Overdriven screws break the paper face and lose holding strength. Use a dimpler bit and check the first few by touch.

Rushing the mud. Each coat needs to be fully dry — not just surface-dry — before the next. Applying the second coat over a damp first coat traps moisture, causes bubbling, and creates shrinkage cracks.

Skipping primer. It seems like a way to save a step. It isn't. The flashing problem will send you back for additional paint coats that still won't fully cover it.

Using mesh tape at inside corners. Mesh tape doesn't feather cleanly into inside corners and tends to crack under the seasonal movement Calgary homes experience — temperature swings and humidity changes flex walls enough to open mesh-taped inside corners within a year or two.


Know When to Call a Pro

DIY drywall is feasible on a small, accessible project — a single room, a ceiling repair, a basement partition wall. When the scope grows to a full basement, fire-rated assemblies, or a Level 5 finish, the skill gap and time cost add up fast.
