Taping and Mudding Drywall: 5 Mistakes That Show Up When the Paint Goes On
Most DIY drywall problems don't reveal themselves until the wall is primed and painted. That's the cruelest part of taping and mudding — the mistakes are invisible under joint compound, and only the finished surface tells the truth. By then, you're either sanding back significant work or living with ridges and bubbles you'll notice every time the light hits the wall at an angle.
We've taped a lot of drywall across Calgary basements and renovations. The five mistakes below aren't rare edge cases — they show up consistently on jobs where homeowners attempted taping before calling us in, and they're worth knowing before you pick up a knife.
Mistake 1: Too Much Mud Under the Tape
This is the most common error, and it causes two separate problems depending on how it plays out.
If there's too much compound under the tape, the tape floats rather than bonds. As the mud dries and shrinks, the tape wrinkles or creates ridges along the seam. Those ridges then get buried under subsequent coats — which means more compound, more sanding, and a finished seam that's visibly thicker than the surrounding wall.
The other outcome: the excess mud squeezes out from under the tape during embedding, gets smeared across the board face, and then partially dries before you've finished the run. You end up chasing dried compound across 12 feet of board while trying to embed tape cleanly.
What to do instead: Apply a thin, even first coat to the seam — enough to fully wet the paper tape but not so much that it builds up. The tape should press into the compound and adhere flat, with only a small amount of excess mud wiping out from each edge. A 6-inch taping knife works well here for control.
Mistake 2: Starting the Tape at the End of a Run
Laying tape from one end of a long wall seam to the other sounds logical. In practice, it causes the tape to shift or wrinkle before you've had a chance to press it flat — particularly on runs of 8 feet or more.
The standard approach is to position the tape at the centre of the seam and work outward in both directions. This keeps the tape seated while you smooth, prevents it from bunching at one end, and gives you two shorter runs to control rather than one long one.
The same principle applies on ceiling seams, where gravity makes it even harder to manage a tape run that's shifting from one end.
Mistake 3: Skipping the Tape Entirely
Some homeowners — and even some inexperienced contractors — try to fill drywall seams with compound alone, building up enough mud to hide the joint without embedding tape. This doesn't hold.
Joint compound is not a structural adhesive. It shrinks as it dries. A seam filled with compound and no tape will crack along the joint line within months, sometimes sooner if there's any movement in the framing. Calgary homes see enough seasonal movement — from temperature swings and settling — that an untaped seam won't survive one full heating season intact.
Paper tape embedded in compound creates a mechanical bond across the seam. The tape itself carries the tension that compound alone cannot. There's no reliable substitute for it on standard seams.

Mistake 4: Sanding Too Hard Between Coats
Between coats of compound, sanding is about levelling small ridges and high spots — not removing material in volume. Aggressive sanding between coats does two things you don't want.
First, it cuts through the dried compound and damages the paper face of the tape. Once the tape paper is roughed up or torn, the next coat doesn't adhere cleanly to that surface, and the area will telegraph through as a texture difference under paint. Second, aggressive sanding creates fine gypsum dust that embeds in the surrounding drywall paper, which can affect how primer absorbs and how the final coat looks under raking light.
Between coats, a light pass with 120-grit or similar is enough to knock down any ridges or trowel marks. The goal is to remove imperfections, not to reduce the thickness of the coat.
Final sanding after the last coat is where you do more deliberate work — but still not aggressive. The surface needs to be smooth enough to prime without being scoured.
Mistake 5: Using the Same Knife for Every Coat
A 6-inch taping knife is the right tool for applying the first coat and embedding tape. It gives you control over a narrow surface and lets you press the tape flat without dragging compound too far from the seam.
The problem is when that same 6-inch knife gets used for the second and third finish coats. Finish coats need to feather out well past the seam edge — sometimes 10 to 12 inches on each side — so the transition from the mudded area to the bare board is gradual enough to disappear under paint. A 6-inch knife physically can't spread compound that wide in a single pass.
For second coats, a 10-inch knife. For final finish coats, a 10- or 12-inch knife. The wider the tool, the more gradual the feather, and the less visible the seam will be after painting.
If you're targeting a high-end finish — no seams visible even under critical lighting — that's a Level 5 drywall finish, which involves a full skim coat over the entire surface rather than just feathering individual seams.
What the Full Process Actually Looks Like

Each coat needs to fully dry before the next one goes on. Rushing a second coat onto mud that's still green causes shrinkage cracks and adhesion problems.
Calgary-Specific Conditions That Affect Taping Quality
What we can say from experience: Calgary basements in particular are worth being patient with. The heating season runs long, relative humidity in finished basements fluctuates, and joints that were mudded quickly during a cold period don't always perform the way the same work would in summer. When to Call a Pro Instead
Taping and mudding is the part of drywall work that takes the most time to develop feel for. The knife angles, the pressure, the amount of compound — these come from repetition. A beginner can do a structurally sound job on a utility space. A finished bedroom, living room, or any wall that gets raking light from a window or directional lighting is less forgiving.
If the project is a full basement development, a renovation with multiple rooms, or any space where the finish quality is going to matter at resale, professional drywall taping and mudding is usually the faster path to a result you won't have to redo.
