Drywall Taping & Mudding
Drywall Taping & Mudding in Calgary
Taping and mudding is where drywall installation becomes a finished wall. It's the most skill-dependent part of the entire process — and the part that shows.
Rushed taping creates visible seams, cracks that reappear after painting, and ridges that catch light in all the wrong ways. Done properly, taping and mudding disappears completely under paint and the walls look like they were always there.
At DryBuild, taping and mudding is our core trade. We've finished thousands of walls and ceilings across Calgary, Airdrie, Okotoks, Cochrane, and Chestermere — we know what a proper finish looks like and we deliver it every time.
Why Calgary's Climate Makes Taping Quality Critical
Calgary's temperature swings — from -40°C winters to +30°C summers — cause homes to expand and contract significantly. Poor taping with air pockets, dry spots, or inadequate feathering will crack and fail within one or two seasons. Properly embedded tape and properly feathered coats flex with the structure and hold for years.
The Taping & Mudding Process
Step 1 — Tape Embedding Paper or mesh tape is embedded in the first coat of joint compound over every seam, inside corner, and butt joint. Tape must be fully embedded with no bubbles, wrinkles, or dry spots — these become cracks later.
Step 2 — Fill Coat A second coat of compound is applied over the tape and all fastener heads. Wider than the first coat, feathered at the edges to begin blending into the drywall surface.
Step 3 — Finish Coat A thin final coat — applied wide and feathered smooth. This coat defines the final surface before sanding. A good finish coat means minimal sanding.
Step 4 — Sanding Sanded to a uniform surface — no ridges, no tool marks, no visible tape edges. We sand under proper lighting to catch everything before primer goes on.
Step 5 — Final Inspection We inspect the finished surface under raking light before we consider the job done. If we see it, we fix it.
Finish Levels
Level 4 — Standard finish for painted walls. Two coats over tape and fasteners, sanded smooth. Appropriate for most residential and commercial applications with satin or semi-gloss paint.
Level 5 — Premium finish. Full skim coat over the entire surface after standard taping. Required for flat paint, high-gloss finishes, or spaces with strong or raking light. This is what separates good drywall work from exceptional drywall work.
We default to Level 4 and recommend Level 5 when the application warrants it. We'll tell you honestly which one you need.
Corner Finishing
Inside corners — paper tape embedded and finished flush with the wall surface. Clean, straight lines from floor to ceiling.
Outside corners — metal or vinyl corner bead installed and mudded flush. Crisp, durable corners that resist damage.
Archways — flexible corner bead for curved surfaces, finished smooth.
What Does Taping & Mudding Cost in Calgary?
Professional drywall taping and mudding in Calgary typically ranges from $1.50–$3.00 per square foot depending on finish level, ceiling height, and complexity of the space. Level 5 finishing costs more than Level 4 due to the additional skim coat and sanding time.
