Batt Insulation
Batt Insulation Installation in Calgary
Insulation is one of those things you can't fix after drywall goes up. Getting it right before the walls close is critical — for energy efficiency, comfort, moisture control, and building code compliance.
At DryBuild, we install batt insulation across Calgary, Airdrie, Okotoks, Cochrane, and Chestermere as part of our complete interior finishing service. Because we're typically the crew installing the drywall right after — we have every reason to make sure the insulation is done properly.
Why Insulation Matters More in Calgary
Calgary's climate is extreme — winters regularly hit -30°C and summers reach +30°C. That 60-degree swing puts enormous demand on your home's envelope. Proper insulation is what keeps heating bills manageable and every room comfortable year-round.
Batt insulation installed with gaps, compression, or missing vapor barrier loses a significant portion of its rated R-value before a single winter passes. We install it right the first time — because we're closing those walls with drywall right after.
Types of Batt Insulation We Install
Fiberglass Batt Insulation The most common insulation type for residential construction in Calgary. Cost-effective, widely available, and available in multiple R-values for different applications — exterior walls, interior partitions, basement ceilings, and more.
Installed cost in Calgary: typically $1.50–$4.00 per square foot depending on R-value and application.
Mineral Wool (Rockwool) Batt Insulation Denser than fiberglass, mineral wool provides better acoustic performance in addition to thermal insulation. It's also fire-resistant and moisture-resistant — making it the better choice for basement perimeter walls and party walls between units.
Where We Install Insulation
Basement Perimeter Walls Alberta Building Code requires insulation on basement perimeter walls — minimum R-20 effective for Calgary's climate zone. We install to code and ensure proper vapor barrier placement before drywall goes up.
Interior Partition Walls Sound insulation between rooms — bedrooms, home offices, media rooms. Mineral wool batts in interior walls significantly reduce sound transmission between spaces without adding bulk.
Basement Ceilings Insulation between the basement ceiling and main floor above — for thermal comfort and sound reduction. Particularly important in legal suites where Alberta Building Code requires specific STC ratings between dwelling units.
Exterior Wall Cavities During renovations where exterior walls are opened up, we install or upgrade insulation to current Alberta Building Code requirements — minimum R-22 for above-grade exterior walls.
Alberta Building Code R-Value Requirements
Calgary's climate zone requires minimum insulation values per the National Building Code — Alberta Edition:
| Location | Minimum R-Value |
|---|---|
| Above-grade exterior walls | R-22 |
| Basement perimeter walls | R-20 effective |
| Ceilings below attic | R-60 |
We install to code minimums at a minimum — and can advise on upgrading for better energy performance if your budget allows. Exceeding minimums is always worth considering in Calgary's climate.
Vapor Barrier
In Alberta's cold climate, a poly vapor barrier is required on the warm side of insulation in exterior walls and basement applications. Missing or improperly installed vapor barrier leads to condensation inside wall cavities — and eventually mold.
We install poly vapor barrier as part of our insulation work — properly sealed at seams, penetrations, and electrical boxes.
