Sound Isolation & Acoustic Drywall

Sound Isolation & Acoustic Drywall

Noise transfer between floors and rooms is one of the most common complaints in finished basements and legal suites. Whether you're building a home theatre, a basement suite, or simply want peace and quiet between floors — proper sound isolation starts with the right assembly before drywall goes up.

At DryBuild, we install complete soundproofing systems that go beyond standard insulation. Our approach combines multiple layers of sound control to achieve real, measurable noise reduction.

What We Install

Acoustic Insulation Sound-absorbing batt insulation installed between studs and joists to absorb airborne sound before it reaches the wall assembly.

Sonopan Panels Sonopan is a recycled rubber composite panel installed directly against the framing before drywall. It decouples the drywall from the structure, significantly reducing impact noise and low-frequency sound transmission.

Sound Bars (Resilient Channels) Metal resilient channels installed horizontally across studs create a physical break between the framing and drywall. This prevents sound vibrations from traveling directly through the structure.

5/8" Type X Drywall Standard 1/2" drywall provides minimal sound resistance. We use 5/8" drywall as the final layer — its added mass significantly improves Sound Transmission Class (STC) ratings. It also meets Alberta Building Code requirements for fire separation in legal suites.

When You Need Sound Isolation

  • Legal basement suites — Alberta Building Code requires minimum STC ratings between dwelling units
  • Home theatres and media rooms — prevent sound from disturbing the rest of the house
  • Bedrooms above mechanical rooms — reduce HVAC and mechanical noise
  • Shared walls between units — multi-family and garage suite applications

The DryBuild Approach

We assess your specific situation and recommend the right combination of products. Not every project needs every layer — we'll tell you what will actually make a difference and what's unnecessary for your budget and goals.
